Surulere Now! had lunch at Mac-Lina Spot: Restaurant & Bar at 6 Alaode Street, off Kilo bus-stop. We were drawn by the promise of real poundedyam. We very much hold the opinion that, with labour cheap and young men plentiful, there was no reason for eating spots to serve the ubiquitous Poundo (or any of the other varieties on sale). Imagine what Okonkwo in Achebe’s seminal novel, Things Fall Apart, would have made of the abomination. Only the real thing could have hoped to throw his son in a fight.
Pleased to say, we were not disappointed. All of us bypassed the eba, fufu etc etc as we selected from the wide range of soups on offer. For myself, white soup was invented specifically for pounded yam, invariably with fish. Igoni Barrett, the writer, wen
t for okazi, as did Chip, the fashion designer. Sanne, the chocolate lady we featured in an earlier issue, plumped for oha. Nobody had any complaints and the price, at N3,500 for all four of us, was good value, even in these hard times.
According to Chip, who introduced us to the joint, the establishment was run by the owner’s two sons, who it transpired were responsible for the yam-pounding – and had the biceps to prove it. Well, you heard it here first. You can reach Mac-Lina Spot on
