Destiny Hair Clinic

Meet Happiness, proprietor of Destiny Hair Clinic at 8 Ekololu St, off Falolu Rd., who is our SME of the month. She first opened shop in March 2006, which means that she also happens to be celebrating her tenth anniversary to coincide with this issue of Surulere Now!  I was struck by her natural vivacity even as she described the hardships of running a small business, a story boringly familiar to all Nigerians even as we await the promised change. There was only one customer at the time I visited. She confirmed that business was down on this time last year and joked about women carrying weave-ons for weeks on end, with the attendant damage to their hair and scalp. She did explain the intricacies of her trade but those who know know and those who don’t don’t need to know. Actually, her main concern was our local government, which is why she took down her sign but then here she is in the pages of a community magazine which is always happy to chastise the councillors and whichever chairman happens to be on seat for a job not well done; indeed, not done at all. So, Happiness, all the best from Surulere Now! And if the boys do descend on you to extort money under whatever pretext, be sure that Surulere Now! will be on hand to cover the story.
